Now that the initial website is set up on AWS, I needed to transfer my domain across to AWS, via Route 53. Log into AWS and search for Route53. You then either purchase a domain or start the transfer from your old domain host.
At this point I selected a static ip address (free with AWS) which means the site will always be registered at a specific ip address, even after rebooting the instance (virtual web server) on AWS.
The transfer seemed easy enough to start, but I never received an email to approve it from GANDI, the Domain Name Registrar for AWS. After 5 days it failed so I re-started. This time it was successful and it transferred within 24 hours, job done!
The transfer process in Route 53 sets various things up, such as DNS name servers (they point to Amazon’s own servers when you type “twitawoo.co.uk” or “www.twitawoo.co.uk” in your browser).
This also didn’t go well, due to the transfer from IONOS, which kept the old DNS servers, so the website was pointing to the wrong/old servers.
However, following a search through documentation I edited 1 of the 2 sets of name servers to match the AWS ones..finally…when typing twitawoo.co.uk in a browser, the website home page was displayed!
In the future I shall close my old site: www.twitawoo.com and transfer the domain and re-build the sister site.
